Efficient oil treatment for maximum SQC crane reliability
Ship-to-Shore Container Cranes (SQC/STS) are critical assets at container terminals. Their drive systems and gearboxes operate for long periods under demanding loads, while every hour of unplanned maintenance can directly affect crane availability and terminal productivity.
For container terminals, this makes the condition of the lubricating oil particularly important. Contamination, oil degradation and excessive operating temperatures can accelerate wear, shorten oil life and ultimately increase the risk of expensive downtime.
In this SQC application, the challenge extended beyond contamination alone. The heavily loaded gearboxes operate at elevated oil temperatures. The solution, the TRIS developed OSCA LS oil conditioning platform, capable of continuously filtering the oil while also helping to maintain a stable oil operating temperature.
Continuous filtration while the crane remains operational
Container terminals depend on maximum crane availability. Ships need to be unloaded and reloaded as efficiently as possible, making lengthy maintenance interventions particularly undesirable.
One of the major advantages of the OSCA LS system is that oil conditioning takes place while the crane remains operational. The system operates independently from the main lubrication circuit and continuously circulates and conditions the oil without interfering with normal crane operation.
This significantly reduces the maintenance time associated with oil contamination while helping to maintain the oil at the required cleanliness level.
Cleaner oil and longer oil service life
Effective oil filtration not only protects the oil itself, but also the critical components of the drive system.
The typical intended service life of the oil used in these cranes is approximately 20,000 operating hours. Without effective oil conditioning, however, the oil may require replacement after only approximately 2,000 operating hours.
With the OSCA LS systems installed, an oil service life of approximately 20,000 operating hours can once again be reliably achieved.
Up to 90% reduction in wear
The machinery itself also benefits from the significantly improved oil condition.
By continuously removing contamination and maintaining the oil in optimum condition, wear can be reduced by up to 90%. This contributes directly to longer component life, increased machine reliability and reduced maintenance requirements.
For equipment as critical as an SQC crane, the economic impact extends well beyond the cost of the lubricant itself. Avoiding unnecessary oil changes and maintenance interventions also helps prevent costly crane downtime.
From scheduled to condition-based oil changes
Continuous oil conditioning also enables a different approach to lubricant maintenance.
Instead of automatically replacing large quantities of oil after a predetermined number of operating hours, the actual condition of the lubricant can be monitored.
Oil changes can therefore be performed on a condition-based approach, replacing the oil when its actual condition requires it rather than simply because a fixed maintenance interval has been reached.
This reduces unnecessary oil consumption, maintenance costs and downtime while making much better use of the potential service life of the lubricant.
OSCA LS: filtration and temperature control
The gearbox in this application presented another important challenge: oil temperature.
Under heavy operating conditions, the gearbox was running hot. Elevated and fluctuating oil temperatures influence both lubricant condition and viscosity, while viscosity itself has a direct influence on filtration performance.
The OSCA LS solution was therefore configured not only to maintain oil cleanliness, but also to help keep the oil temperature stable.
By combining controlled offline filtration with oil temperature management, the system creates more stable operating conditions for the lubricant. This allows the oil to remain within the desired temperature range while the filtration system continues to operate effectively as viscosity and operating conditions change.
This is an important distinction: the OSCA LS is not simply an additional filter attached to the gearbox. It functions as an oil conditioning system, controlling the conditions under which the oil is continuously treated.
Load Sensing technology for changing operating conditions
The OSCA LS series was developed by TRIS B.V. for applications where oil viscosity, temperature and operating conditions can vary significantly for turbines, hydraulics, gearboxes….
The system automatically adapts its operation to the actual oil conditions. Depending on the application, OSCA LS systems can also be equipped with additional functionality such as oil heating, cooling, sensors, particle monitoring and condition monitoring.
This allows the system to be configured around the specific lubricant, viscosity, contamination level, operating temperature and requirements of the machine.
For SQC crane drive systems, this combination of oil filtration, temperature management and condition monitoring provides a much more comprehensive approach than filtration alone.
Engineering for critical drive systems
